It is so great to have spring coming to Northern Nevada! But with it comes the dreaded allergies that many of us suffer from. Did you know that your allergies can affect your dental health?

Allergens cause many of us to end up with congested sinuses that cause pressure and pain on our upper jaw and teeth. With allergies, also comes lots of mucus which can cause us to have bad breath. The post-nasal drip, mucus from your sinuses leaking into your throat, can cause throat irritation as well as an unpleasant smell in your mouth.  When congestion blocks up our nose, we breathe out of our mouths which causes dry mouth. Many antihistamines that are taken for allergies also have the side effect of drying out the mouth.

Dry mouth is not a comfortable side effect and can increase the risk of developing cavities, bad breath, and gum disease. Saliva has the great function of washing away harmful bacteria, but when your mouth is dry it can turn into the perfect place for bacteria to multiply.

What are some ways you can take care of your oral health while battling those allergies?

First: Drink lots of water to keep your mouth from getting dry and wash away excess mucus.

Second: Treat your allergies by medication or shots. Gargling salt water can also help draw mucus out of your sinuses and relieve some of the sinus pressure.

Third: Continue to keep brushing, flossing, and your regular dental visits!  Together we will get through seasonal allergies!

It’s been a long winter here in Reno, get out there and enjoy the warm weather with your family and friends. As always, if you have any questions in regards to your oral health, please give us a call and we can help you work through your concerns!
