dental visit

Your child’s first dental visit can cause a lot of anxiety for a little one! A strange person probing around in your mouth isn’t the most comforting thing. But there are great ways to prepare your child for their first dental visit. We’ve compiled some tips that you can use!

  • Stay positive – The first step in preparing for your child’s visit to the dentist is promoting a positive attitude towards oral hygiene at home.  Explain to your child how important it is to keep their teeth and gums healthy.   Many parents are afraid of the dentist themselves, so please be sure not to relay any of those fears to your children. Use only positive words and emotions regarding the dentist so that fear or apprehension is not passed along
  • Role Modeling – If your child has an older sibling who has been coming to the dentist, it is a good idea to bring the younger child to watch while their older sibling is getting their teeth cleaned – kids do well when they have good role models.
  • Read or Watch TV – Reading books about brushing teeth or going to the dentist to prepare for their visits.  (Example: Dora: Show Me Your Smile, The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist) or watch a favorite show where the characters go to the dentist (Example: Peppa Pig Goes to the Dentist). You tube is a great free source as well!
  • Sing or Count– Sing songs as you are brushing their teeth at home or make a game out of counting teeth. You can have them count their favorite doll or stuffed animal’s teeth as well
  • Familiarize – Look at pictures of the doctor they will be seeing on the practice website and get them familiar with their name and face. If you would like a tour of the office prior to their visit please do not hesitate to call and request this.
  • Positive reinforcement – Plan something special or have a toy for them if they do well with their visit.
  • Comfort – You can have your child bring their favorite stuffed animal or toy with them for additional comfort to hold during their cleaning and exam
